Frequently Asked Questions About U8-U10 Soccer

Why the Traveling Program over the Rec. Program?
Recreational soccer is an in-house program where the focus is to encourage participation and introduce players to the excitement soccer provides. The Traveling Program competes against other MYSA Member Clubs at various playing levels. The focus of the Traveling Program is to develop players to reach their highest playing potential. Both programs look to foster an enjoyment and passion for the sport.

How is the Traveling Program Organized?
We organize teams by age, gender, skill and commitment level. Our goal is to provide every player a place to play where they are challenged at the appropriate level. Currently we offer U9 through U19 teams for both boys and girls from C3 to C1 levels. In 2011, SSA had 450+ traveling players involved on 29 teams.

How many teams do you form in an age group?
The number of players registered dictates the number of teams offered in an age group. Shakopee Soccer tries to accommodate all registered players if we are able to meet minimum roster needs.

What is the travel commitment?
Shakopee is typically placed in the South, Southwest or West MYSA region with half the games played in Shakopee and the other half played in other communities. The MYSA assigns teams to regions and SSA does not control who teams play. Game schedules come out from the MYSA in April.

Where are practices and home games played?
Home games and practices are held at the 17th Avenue Soccer Complex. Our supplemental sites are the high school and jr. high.

What are the different competitive levels for SSA’s Traveling Program?
There are three levels of competition: Classic 1, Classic 2, & Classic 3 (C1, C2, C3).   Each level is determined by the level of skill and competition. U11 teams compete at the C2 and C3 level. U12 and up at C1, C2, C3. Our U9 and U10 players compete at the Maroon or Gold levels. Maroon is the higher level of the two.  The club self selects the level teams play at until U14 when the MYSA assigns teams levels based on a promotion and relegation system.

How does a team decide which competitive levels they will compete at?
The level is determined by the Director of Coaching along with the evaluation committee and the team coach. The goal is to place teams at a level that is appropriate for proper player development. If numbers allow at the U9/U10 level, a Maroon and a Gold team will be formed. At the U11 age, if numbers allow, a team will be placed at C2, with each additional team placed at C2 or C3.

What if my child is unable to attend tryouts?
Register your child for the season and contact the Director of Coaching. Attendance at tryouts is important but we are willing to work with families who communicate conflicts ahead of time. If your child does not attend tryouts, team placement will be determined from the previous year’s performance. If your child did not play with SSA previously, arrangements will be made to have your child evaluated. Roster spots will not be held for players who do not register and communicate with SSA before evaluations/tryouts.

Who will be coaching my child’s team?
U9 & U10 teams are usually coached by a volunteer parent who is under the tutelage of a SSA Trainer. The U11 & U12 teams are coached by either parents or a hired coach. At the U13 and older age groups, teams are generally coached by a hired coach.

What else does SSA provide for player development?
In addition to Winter Training that is included with your 2012 registration, our Winter Futsal Program is another program highly encouraged. This program is staffed by top flight trainers and is scheduled on the weekends. Throughout the summer, SSA offers four different camps: Kicks Camp, Attacking & Defending Camp, Skills Camp, and H.S. Prep Camp. SSA members receive discounted prices for these additional programs. Further information on each program can be found online.

2012 Traveling Soccer for U11-U19 Teams

Shakopee Soccer will be facilitating twenty teams and nearly 300 players for the U11-U19 ages in the 2012 Traveling Season.  We would like to welcome both new and returning players and hope you share in our optimism for the 2012 Season.

As you look at rosters, team sizes will vary.  Some age groups are full and Shakopee Soccer will not be able to accommodate any additional players.  Other age groups need additional players.  As the fall & winter go, Shakopee Soccer will be working to bring in more players to fill these teams.

MYSA Birthyear Guidelines

Verify what age group your child falls into by the MYSA Birthyear Guidelines.

Shakopee Soccer Association - Tryout and Evaluation Policy

Tryouts and evaluations are held to determine the number of teams SSA will field at each age group and to place players at a playing level that best fits their commitment level and playing ability.
