U.S. Soccer's Mandated Age Group Change

In August 2015, the US Soccer Federation, the national governing body for soccer in the U.S., announced two key initiatives to improve the playing and coaching environment:

  1. Small sided standards
  2. Birth year registration

The initiatives are mandated changes for all affiliate organizations including US Youth Soccer, US Club, AYSO, SAY, etc... and they are described here:
http://www.ussoccer.com/coaching-education/resources/2015-player-development-initiatives

The birth year registration initiative will be the first mandate implemented.  These changes will go into effect starting with try-outs and team formation for the 2016-2017 season (our current season is 2015-2016 and remains unaffected).  More information can be reviewed from the MYSA website here:

This change affects all clubs and not just the Shakopee Soccer Association.  There are many questions and concerns that have been brought up by many people already.  To help with this we have a committee assembled that has been evaluating how this will specifically affect SSA teams.  Please join us February 21st, 2pm at the High School for the opportunity to learn more details, hear the SSA implementation plan, and ask questions.

Below is a table to illustrate what age level team your child will be identified with next year.

The other mandated changes relating to Small-Sided Standards will be made in the fall of 2017 and as such will be addressed at a later time.
