Tryouts - More Information

Tryout & Team Formation Goals

(1)To ensure your son/daughter has the opportunity to play and develop on team with players of similar ability & commitment.

(2)To produce competitive teams that can compete at district, state and regional levels.

Tryout Process
  • Coach Ranking + Tryout Ranking = Overall Team Formation Ranking
For more detailed information about the tryout process see SSA Tryout Process PDF on this page.

1. Coach Player Ranking

At the conclusion of the Spring/Summer season, every SSA coach completes a player ranking for all the players on his/her team.

2. Tryout Day Scores

Players will compete against a group of their peers in various situational drills; during these drills players will be evaluated on skills such as first touch, passing, vision, ball skills and overall play.

3. Team Formation
Coach rankings and tryout rankings are combined and averaged to create an overall ranking.

4. Team Formation Meetings
After all tryouts are completed, SSA holds a Team Formation Meeting where the coach rankings, tryout rankings, overall rankings and the additional considerations are reviewed and all team rosters are created.

Team formation decisions are the responsibility of:
  • Coaching Director
  • Age Group coaches for the upcoming season
  • Executive Director
With assistance from:
  • SSA Age Group Coordinators
Additional input may be solicited from age group coaches from the previous season.

No adult who has a child, niece, or nephew in an age group is allowed to be a part of the team formation process for that age group.
Players Missing Try-outs:
  • Current SSA competitive players who cannot attend tryouts are asked to send a “Player Missing Tryout Request Form” to SSA for team placement for the upcoming season.
  • By sending this request, it helps identify players that will not be able to attend SSA tryouts, but would like to be placed on a team and intend to play. We want to encourage players to be at tryouts as this is an important piece of the player selection and team formation process, but do understand there are circumstances that may prevent a player from making their tryout date.
  • Players still need to register for tryouts ahead of time even if they will not be attending tryouts, so they are in the system and can be accounted for during team placements.
  • Sending this request does not guarantee a position on a specific team, but rather it alerts the coach and the coaching director that even though your child will not be at tryouts, they are still interested in playing for SSA.
  • Players will be placed on a team based on their skill level.  No player is guaranteed a spot on a team and “close calls” will go to those that attend tryouts.
  • If a player intends to play and is signed up in time, we will have a team for them.
  • SSA is unable to arrange individual tryouts.

Players missing tryouts process - Please complete and send the "Player Missing Tryout Request Form" found on this page to: admin@shakopeesoccer.com .  This request needs to be submitted no later then one week before the scheduled tryout date.
